Providence, RI (10/12/2009) - The Marriott Hotel Downtown Providence was the setting on Columbus Day evening when Michael McGovern, retired Executive Director of Special Olympics Rhode Island, was presented with the the Hope Award, Rhode Island State Council Knights of Columbus’ most prestigious honor. The event was attended by over 150 members of the Knights of Columbus and members of Special Olympics Rhode Island, and hosted by Associate State Advocate Joseph McGair.

Mr. McGair did a masterful job as emcee, and was joined on the dais by his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Michael McGovern, His Excellency Bishop Louis Gelineau, our Worthy State Deputy Stephen Ciolfi and his wife Peg, Past State Deputy Richard Smith and his wife, and the new Executive Director of Special Olympics, Dennis DeJesus.

The speaking portion of the program featured Bishop Gelineau, Richard Smith, Stephen Ciolfi and Dennis DeJesus, all of who delivered riveting testimonials to their relationship with Mike, a Brother Knight from St. Francis Council, and his twenty plus year tenure with Special Olympics, the last ten as Executive Director. They set the stage for Mike’s remarks, a heartfelt acknowledgement of his lifelong commitment to upholding the mission and values of the Special Olympics, and the impact he has had on the approximately 2,700 young and adult athletes across the State. Mike was sure to thank all for their support and dedication to the cause he holds dear, including the Special Olympics athletes in attendance.
